Remastered by }{eywood by specific request
Lineage: cassette (M) > ? > CD-R > EAC > Adobe audition 1.5 (multiple EQs,
WNS, peak limiting, editing and fades) > iZotope RX 2 (dropout repair) > TLH
(sector alignment, flac 8)
Although the source for this is a master transfer don't expect a lot. It was
made with rather lo-fi gear, and the tape had seen a lot of wear and tear
over the years before the digital transfer was done. I got this as a CD-R,
so transfer info is before my time.
This is a full remaster to correct as many flaws as possible in the
recording. A general EQ was done first to clarify the music somewwhat. Then
a narrow band parametric EQ was used to remove a low frequency hum.
The original recording was in mono. so the vast majority of the dropouts in
the tape were edited around by filling one channel with the other. A mono
folddown was prepared once most of the dropouts were fixed. This mono track
had all the tiny pops and tics removed, hiss attenuated and another EQ pass
was done to sweeten it. Then any remaining dropouts were repaired by editing
fragments (usually a couple of guitar chords) from other parts of the song
or show. Finally a pass through iZotope RX 2 was done to remove any
remaining flaws. I smoothed any cuts in the tape and removed any tape stops
and mic bumps. I did NOT patch any missing portions from other shows like I
usually do, so the first verse of Seek & Destroy is still missing, as is a
piece at the end of Creeping Death. The quality of the recording
deteriorates beginning at the cut in Creeping Death (sounds like a tape
dubbing issue that didn't exist on the side 1 transfer, probably caused by
improper alignment on an auto-reverse deck) and there wasn't much that could
be done about it.
What results is a mono recording that is, although still not flawless (I
think that would be impossible at this point in time due to the damage to
the tape), a far more listenable version than the original transfer.
