Like a fine wine, Slayer always get better with age and never disappoint.
Their sound guy, however, always does but more about that later!
This concert was very special, as opposed to their Oct 8 2009 gig at the
Hordern. The boys treated Sydney with a 2nd show that entailed the entire
Reign in Blood album as part of their set. Played with such intensity and
ferocity, there was not one fan out there who didn't have a cheesy smile on
their face or making devil horns with their hands. This was truly a
monumental metal moment for all Sydneysiders.
Onto the technical bits, I'm not sure what the obsession is with Slayer's
sound guys and overpowering kick drums but coming from a drummer, there's
always too much kick drums in the mix and never enough sparkle in the
guitars. The sound guy was completely tone deaf at the Hordern (acoustically
harsh venue in itself) and was no different at this acoustically difficult
venue either. Unfortunately, I let my rage get the better of me and you will
hear me yell out to the sound guy after their opening song. Apologies but I
really do like to enjoy my concerts aurally and not physically with massive
sound waves slamming every one of my internal organs!
Compared to the Hordern though, the crowd was slightly better behaved around
me with the exception of a couple randoms who tried talking to me. There
wasn't much spill from them on this recording, thankfully. Overall, this
recording definitely leaves my recording of their performance at the Hordern
for dead, due to the horrible sound and the amount of people walking in
front of me, backing up on me, trying not to fall by holding onto me ... and
of course, me getting angry enough to push people away or onto the floor.
This venue was a blessing by comparison!
Again, I apologise for my short outburst of rage at the sound guy early in
the recording but hopefully you'll all enjoy this one as much as I managed
to! All feedback appreciated as always. |
